American Express held a Live Platinum Urban Favours party for their Platinum members, and I was invited to it in my capacity as a blogger. It was held on Friday night at The Canary at Clarke Quay. I had not been to Clarke Quay for a long time, so it took me some time to find the place.

I met up with Brian, who is in the PR team for the event, and he gave me the invites. At first, we sat by the side, then later the guy in charge of the place moved us to a new table, which was set up right in front of the runway.

Jean Danker was the emcee, and the programme soon started.

First, a countertenor, Benjamin Wong, sang in monosyllabic sounds and in falsetto. I’m surprised that they included him at such a party. That gives hope to an amateur soprano like me who wishes to have an opportunity to go mainstream. I guessed the theme for the night was this, because the other artistes repeated their lines over and over again, which was quite interesting to unwind to on a Friday night after a long week of work.

Addy, a rock star, sang something about Ruby Ruby Ruby, and I thought that was a great song. He’s great at playing the electric guitar.

Jeassea Thyidor used to be in Singapore Idol, and is a professional singer looked resplendent in her silver dress. She has a powerful voice in the low range.

A group of guys painted in silver beat their ways, though I’m not that keen on such percussion performances.

Some deejays spun records, and one managed to get the Indian crowd dancing with a blend of Indipop and Bhangra music. I liked Chris Ho’s deejaying.

Meanwhile, models were strutting their stuff on the runway, and some of them were really tall.

While admiring their slim bodies, I was busy eating some great finger food served by waiters who went around all the tables. That certainly won’t help with my exercise plans. Drinks were available as well, though I only had two glasses. They ran out of glasses rather quickly.

I’m not sure whether three girls were hired as dancers, but they worked the dance floor after the models were gone. Some people danced with them, but most of the people remained in the comfortable white leather/ PVC bean bags. A group of Heineken ladies went around taking Polaroid photos.

One lady came to talk to me about the Platinum Card. I noticed that this card is targeted at the younger professional crowd with money to spend on luxuries. I liked one of the benefits, which was free membership for a year at a gym, if you sign up with a friend, but since I already have my own gym to go to, it would not be that useful to me. Higher membership points were available at certain places, but I’ve more or less retired from the nightlife scene. However, for those who like to chill out with a beer after work, this is one card you could consider. There was still something for me – dining offers. On top of that, there is a chance to win a Porsche with every $50 spent on the card. Not bad. But the pragmatic me will probably just take photos with the car, should I win it, and then sell it and pay off my housing loan.

The group sitting behind us were some minor celebrities, though I couldn’t really recognise them. They came in rather late, around midnight.

Robin Leong, who used to be a Channel 5 actor, is going to produce an international action movie, starring Jason Scott Lee, Fann Wong, some Korean superstar, and I think himself as well. Now, I probably sounded like a groupie, but I was a little excited about seeing Robin Leong. What happened next was totally unrehearsed and surprising. Brian, the one who extended the invitation to me, simply walked up to him and his group, and took a photo of him. I was thinking, shucks, I should have followed him. And then, to my surprise, I noticed Robin Leong and him walking towards my way and the actor-producer talked to me about my blog. He didn’t have a blog. My camera battery was towards its end then, so I’m still waiting for the photos from Brian. Anyway, it was a great end to my night out chilling to cool music. After that, I was a little sleepy and left.

Get paid to blog! I’ve found another way to make money. One of the ways to stretch your dollar is to do something you like. For those who have blogs and would like to make some spare cash, there are a few ways to do so, and one of them is to blog for money.

For those with a reasonable command of English and who are good with grammar, you should try out Smorty, a service that links advertisers to bloggers. If that is a problem, then make sure you get a good grammar and spell check to iron out the kinks in your writing. In addition, you should have an opinion.

What you can do is to sign up as a blogger. There will be a number of tasks available once they approve your blog. To get approval, you must ensure your blog is more than 3 months old, and you should post at least twice a week. In order to get better paying reviews, you should have higher page rank and they also include Smorty points, where the quality and number of posts count towards your points. This is interesting because it opens up more possibility for people to make money. For those who are regular contributors, you get to build up your reputation with Smorty.

Do take time to read through their terms and conditions. One of the best thing about this service, which I feels tops other review sites, is that they pay weekly. You do not have to wait a long time to get paid.

I received my first interview as a blogger yesterday. I shared something about my goals, visions, and some random funny/ controversial things you don’t know about me.

I think I ought to embark on my own series of interviews for this blog. This is something that I have thought about before, but haven’t planned yet.

Here’s a snippet from the interview. Nicholas was the interviewer.
N: That’s powerful sharing! Thanks it made my day! OK… Tell me something REALLY interesting from your past!
S: Huh? Like…
N: Something that your readers dunno about?
S: Ok, I’ve slept on the field where Fandi Ahmad and Lim Tong Hai spat on before.
N: ROFLMAO *nearly had an accident* you almost got me into an accident there!
S: Haha! Look carefully. That was when people loved soccer. I was 15 then, and my school was putting up a mass dance display for Singapore Youth Festival opening ceremony…

Check out the interview here by Nicholas from Highway Of Life.

SingaporeProfit.com is three months old! It is not a really long time, but I have posted 40 entries on various topics to either stretch the dollar or maximise profits in Singapore.

There is another way to make money, and that is through writing reviews for other sites. Payperpost collects opportunities from various advertisers and allows bloggers to write reviews about them. They offer opportunities from a wide range of topics. I signed up with them earlier after hearing from fellow bloggers, but my blog was too young, so when this blog turned 3 months old, I signed up with them again.

There are a few ways to spend the money earned from writing reviews, and the first one is to pay for the webhosting for this site. It is quite expensive to maintain this website, so I want it to be self-sufficient, in order for me to continue to share more ideas. In fact, when I share whatever thoughts I have, some of your comments let me have greater depth in understanding. There is this synergy in learning from one and another.

Being an avid reader, I want to use the money earned to buy even more books on wealth management and stocks investment and more magazine subscriptions. I’m currently subscribing to Pulses, Fortune, The Economist and Time to gain more knowledge on financial and business matters. My next plans are to subscribe to The Business Times and The Edge in a month or two.

Singapore Profit is featured in The Young Businessman! It’s very flattering to note that I’m considered one of the local entrepreneurs who blogs. I see myself as someone who has just started on entrepreneurship, so it came as a surprise.

I have encouraged some teenagers to hone their entrepreneurial skills and have coached some to run small stalls. Sometimes, holding a tight rein on might be counterproductive. I may have certain ideas on what should be done, and sometimes I neglect what the market wants.

Yet, I am amazed by the expertise of different teenagers. Some have the gift of the gab, some have technical expertise, and some are very creative. In fact, as time goes by, I realise that I do not have to do so much handholding. The younger generation are schooled in Innovative and Enterprising mindsets, and they actually come up with better ideas each time round. They also provide great service to their customers. These are the ones who will be highly successful as entrepreneurs in the future.

I think one of the ways to move make money is to start your own business, no matter how small the startup is. I am still at early stages, but with my vision, I’m positive I will succeed. So, if you are a local entrepreneur who blogs, submit your blog to be featured.
